MISSIONS

We at St. Luke's seek to share the Good News of Jesus and to serve others within our parish, in our local community, and, through our missions program, the larger community and "all nations." We believe that support for and involvement in missions is our response to God's grace and love for us. God calls us to care for the spiritual, physical, and social needs of others and to join in the restoration of all people to God's self. The Mission Committee receives suggestions from the parish as to ministries to develop and fund. We especially encourage recommendations of missions which:

- have an existing connection with our parishioners
- are smaller ministries where our contribution can make an appreciable difference
- are explicitly Christian (or sometimes inter-faith) in motivation

The Bishop's Committee gives final approval to missions' selections.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS SEWING: Parishioners from the church, in conjunction with other parishes, support the sewing mission for Anglican Church of El Buen Pastor in Piedras Negras. In addition to providing materials and personal sewing training of the women of Piedras Negras, the mission:

- Works with the Vacation Bible School
- Collects and delivers donations of food, clothing and household items to be distributed by the parish priest
- Participates in the maintenance/construction of the Sewing Building
- Brings back sewing projects from the mission, sells the items and returns the proceeds to the individual women of Piedras Negras
- The Threads of Blessings, a sewing group from the Diocese of West Texas, has had sewing groups in Uganda, Southern Mexico and Honduras for many years.

They have asked the St. Luke's Sewing team and the women of El Buen Pastor to be part of their endeavor. They sent tapestries from Uganda for the Piedras Negras women to sew on shirts and pillows and they, along with the women of Uganda, will receive money for their work.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS CONSTRUCTION: Parishioners from the church, in conjunction with other parishes, support the construction mission for the Anglican Church of El Buen Pastor in Piedras Negras. Mission members assist in the construction/remodeling/repair of homes selected by the Priest of the Anglican Church of El Buen Pastor in Piedras Negras. Members also assist with the Piedras Negras Sewing mission, as needed. We have made donations to the new church under construction in PN. And, a family was selected by Father Miguel to receive a single family, three bedroom home. Our parishioners will participate in the construction. We hope it will be the first of many.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS MEDICAL: Initial progress has been made to determine if the church will consider time, talent and money to a medical mission that will be centered on the Anglican Church of El Buen Pastor in Piedras Negras.

LOCAL DONATIONS: The church allocates 10% of all Plate & Pledge collections each year for use in the Assistance Fund. Money from the Fund is used for local and other areas donations as determined by the Bishop's Committee. Donations in 2010 were to:

- Ministerial Alliance of Johnson City.
- Women at the Well
- JOY
- Round Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.
- Family Crisis Center
- Good Samaritan Center
- Hill Country Children's Advocacy Center
- North Blanco County EMS
- Johnson City Meals on Wheels
- Kairos of Texas Prison Ministry

SANTA FE EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF SAN ANTONIO: Contact was made in previous years to establish a relationship with this small mission church in San Antonio. Parishioners from both churches have participated in worship services at each church. St Luke's has purchased Sunday school materials for the children of Santa Fe Church.

WORLDWIDE MISSION: The church has donated financial support for a mission in Zambia.

PARISHIONERS' MISSION TRIPS: The church has helped support one parishioner's mission trip to Haiti. Currently, two parishioners are planning a mission trip to Alaska.
